Simple Stuff

Strangely overlooked

Baffling how common and simple things are somehow overlooked. Certain basics in a hotel room shouldn’t be an issue yet toilet paper and towels seem harder to come by. How it is a room can be “cleaned” but not be restocked of toilet paper is a mystery. It is possible there were insufficient clean towels at the time, but why would it not be attended to later?

Heat regulation is another often overlooked hotel item. The push to ensure there is a wall thermostat has sometime resulted in regulation problems. If not designed properly insufficiently air movement may cause the thermostat to regulate poorly. Worse is missing features like fan control. Many rely on the white noise of the fan and without it sleep could be illusive. Likely this is overlooked in favor of cost savings when renovating but it should be simple.

Signage is another simple but overlooked matter. Renovations at Union Station one year resulted in many signs disappeared. It should be simple enough to recognize visitors may have difficult navigate as a result, yet it wasn’t considered. Web sites can fail in the same way.

Hamilton has a bay trolley tour suffering from lack of thought. The site clearly indicates tickets are available at the office. Posted office hours show but not where the office is. As the hours posted are regular business hours one may assume tickets cannot be purchased on the weekend. Not rocket science to have proper and full information, but the simple matter of where to get tickets was missed.

Niagara on the Lake is a beautiful place to visit but try finding the strip when you get there. Unless you already know the street name it isn’t straight forward. Signage is limited and maps do not seem to clearly show it. Should be easy enough but better off looking for the historic clock tower in maps to get there.

Often matters that should be obvious have a plethora of signage while the simple matters go without and are strangely overlooked.

If you don't mind giving away your data, there are many home monitoring solutions. None seem to offer the features of the old TED or recently departed IoTawatt. Too bad the useful ones disappear.
