In vogue is to rename everything. The claim is to correct some sort of injustice of the past, but in reality its a lame excuse to remove history. Those wishing to do so are no historians nor do they understand its significance. History allows us to reflect on issues of the past, learn, and avoid future mistakes. When removed we are doomed to repeat it.

Take the renaming of Young Dundas Square in Toronto. The majority of people are opposed to the change. Those in favor tend to append their opinion when given the actual history. Yet city council has spent hordes of time and energy on this name change while ignoring the homeless residing in the square itself. The appalling waste of resources could certainly be put to better use. After all, the city is falling apart, homelessness abounds, and yet the fantasizers of council feel name changes are in the best interests of everyone.

In Winnipeg, council chose to remove Bishop Grandin Blvd in favor of a name no one can even pronounce, much less understand. Again, historical significance is washed away because of some claim of past wrong doing. The fact is these people contributed positively to society and were recognized as such. The removal of the name only adds confusion and difficulty for all in that the only way to refer to the boulevard now is to use the route number. At least that can be understood.
The people so inclined to re-name things should instead create new infrastructure they can tie their weird names to. Stop obliterating history you were never involved in to promote nonsense no one cares about at the expense of people who need services your not willing to supply.
